Feb. 2nd, 2009 08:14 pmI was mistaken for a native speaker today, by our phonetics teacher. The woman has an MA in phonetics, and asked if I am a native speaker! Cue joy, furious blushing and stuttering answer. Compliments like that make all these boring obligatory courses worth it. TIME wrote that Updike died recently, and quoted an image of his: two people in a ski lift, "laughing vapour". It has stayed with me, through -13 degrees today. It's so beautifully phrased.
