You're Not Bright Enough for That
Nov. 30th, 2008 02:04 pmI met my first working-class idiot with an inferiority complex yesterday. He does not vote, and doesn't remember the last time he did. He feels inferior to me because I am embarking on a higher education, he dislikes it even more because I am a woman. And women can apparently not argue their case. My god, the imbecile did not understand the concept of a thought experiment, nor did he understand when I explained it as an illustration of my point (I quote: illustration? No, no, you've got it wrong. An illustration is a drawing in a book.). He even upheld that by walking away from my arguments, he won the discussion.
He was also stupid enough to question my intelligence. First he asks what I'm doing, and when I answer he wants to know how long it will take me to get an education. I give him the short version, and I quote again, "Naw, you're not bright enough for that". Because I am female, utilise words he doesn't understand he thinks himself superior. He actually thought his vote doesn't matter. People like him make me want to do something drastic. It illustrates what I've been reading: education plays a large part in how you live your life. The educated have a working knowledge of how to change their circumstances, non-voting dunderheads do not. Yes, I am hereby calling anyone that does not use their right to vote a dunderhead. I respect a blank vote, because it reflects a conscious decision not to support anyone. Not voting at all means refusing the right to have say in your own life.
"I'm just impressed that a woman can be so opinionated." I wanted to slap the man that said that around the face, and stomp his toes with my most deadly stilettoes. Impressed by an opinionated woman? Impressed that a woman that does not look heinous, and is in-powered rather than dwarfed by her sexuality can have opinions?
All of this has just made me realise that, yes, I do want to disturb the universe. I want to make a change. I was told that I would never make a change, if I didn't speak up. Until yesterday I didn't understand what she meant. Now I do, and I swear I will disturb the universe. Be it by redefinig postmodernism, or making people vote. I will do something, the current state of affairs is intolerable.
Making underqualified women CEO's is counterproductive. Making sure the world knows that women are not, and have never been inferior is what needs to happen. And I do not mean by burning bras. That men can think themselves superior is appalling.
